Wolf Cub Athlete Badge

How it works - There are three groups of events:

a) JUMPS - standing long jump, standing triple jump, sergeant jump.

b) RUNS - shuttle run, hurdles, Harvard steps.

c) THROWS - target throw, sitting throw.

To obtain the badge the Cub must achieve the necessary standard in one event from each group, plus one other event (four events in total)

Jumps

  1. Standing Lon Jump - start with both feet toeing the line - take off simultaneously - measure to rearmost part of the body touching the ground.
  2. Standing Triple Jump - take off foot toeing the line - allowed rocking motion with both feet in contact with floor until take off - order of event: hop, step and jump - measure to rearmost part of the body touching the ground.
  3. Sergeant Jump - standing vertical jump from two-footed take off touching wall as high as possible. Procedure - from standing position close to wall, measure to top reach of finger tip with extended arm (this is point a) - jump vertically from two footed take off reaching to touch the wall as high as possible (this is point b). Height of jump equals point b minus point a. Suggest wet or chalked fingertips to mark wall.

Runs

  1. Shuttle Run - Mark start line on floor/ ground; mark the turn line 10 metres away. Start both feet behind start line - run 10 metres 6 times, each time turn is made one hand must touch the floor/ ground over the line - run across line at finish. (i.e. 6 runs with 5 turns).
  2. Hurdles - The course is the same as for the shuttle run, but obstacles (suggest canes on cones or skittles) 40 cm high are placed 4m and 8m from the start line. The Cub runs to clear the obstacles on the out run only, running straight back on the return legs. At each turn one foot must cross the line - Cubs run across the line to finish. (i.e. 6 runs of 10m with 6 obstacles cleared).
  3. Harvard Steps - Use a P.E. bench or similar strong support - step onto the bench with one foot - whole foot on the bench - step up with the other foot - both feet on the bench - straight knees - step down one foot, then the other. Suggest one minute time allowed. Score for number of completed sequences.

Throws

Target Throw - Tennis ball to be used - twenty over arm throws to be attempted - target to be 40cm diameter circle placed on the wall with lower edge 1.25 metres from the ground - throwing point to be 5 metres from the wall.

Sitting Throw - Sit on floor with legs astride - heels to start line - one handed over arm throw (not a straight arm sling) - keep heels on the ground behind line - measure from where the ball lands back to the start line. Suggest size 4 football or netball or similar.

Note: Safety in all of these activities is of paramount importance and leaders should be aware at all times of any dangerous practices or situations.
